Smooth Like Butter: BTS’ Rise to the Top of the Charts
The only artists that can compete with BTS are BTS themselves. The seven-member Korean boy group released two summer singles, “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” which both topped the Billboard Hot 100 surpassing other hits like “Good 4 U” by Olivia Rodrigo and “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat featuring SZA.
After its release on July 9, “Permission to Dance” — written by Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Johnny McDaid and Jenna Andrews — quickly rose to the top of the charts. Replacing “Butter,” which had held the number one spot for seven weeks in a row, the song made BTS the first act to replace themselves at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 since Drake.
ARMY (the affectionate name used by the BTS fanbase) knows well that whatever Yoongi wants, Yoongi gets. Min Yoongi, aka Suga, predicted that BTS’ newest title track, “Permission to Dance,” would quickly become the No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Clearly, he was correct.
Inviting the world to dance with them, BTS partnered with YouTube to announce the “Permission to Dance” challenge on YouTube Shorts.
“‘Permission to Dance’ is a song that will get everyone’s heart pumping and dancing again,” said BTS in their YouTube Shorts teaser. The challenge starts on July 23 and ends August 14.
Although it has been replaced, “Butter” is not going anywhere. It remains No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and still maintains the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart. The last person to top both the Hot 100 and Songs of the Summer charts with two different songs was Katy Perry in 2010.
BTS has been taking over the world by storm and, thankfully, they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.
